A week full of holiday events, Irish and Japanese movies, and dance parties

Thursday from 7 to 8:30, the Hirshhorn Museum is hosting a poetry reading by preeminent Argentinean writers living in the United States and Canada. Poetry by Luis Alberto Ambroggio, Nela Rio, Lila Zemborain, Mercedes Roffé, and Alicia Borinsky will be recited in Spanish and accompanied by music. Free.

The Capital Irish Film Festival kicks off Thursday with My Brothers at E Street Cinema. The film follows three siblings on a trek to find a replacement for their dying father’s treasured watch. Tickets ($10) are available here or at the door. 8 PM.Catch the local alternative act the Blue Line at the Rock & Roll Hotel Thursday. The group is joined by Redline Addiction, Rites of Ash, and the Resistance. Tickets ($10) are available here. 8:30.

For 21 days, the sidewalks of DC’s F Street, Northwest, between Seventh and Ninth streets are transformed into the Downtown Holiday Market, where more than 150 local vendors sell jewelry, pottery, textiles, and more. There’s also entertainment and seasonal snacks. The bazaar kicks off Friday from noon to 8.

Zoo Lights, the annual display of holiday-themed illuminations at the National Zoo, may be geared toward kids, but that doesn’t mean that kids-at-heart can’t also enjoy the fun. Be on the lookout at this year’s new display featuring Andean bears. Friday; 6 to 8:30. Free.

The Art League is hosting an open house and holiday party at its Madison Annex (305 Madison St., Alexandria) Friday from 6 to 9. Take a tour of the facilities, listen to music by the Rew Smith Band, watch artist demonstrations, and check out the ceramics and jewelry sale. Refreshments are provided. Free.

Linda Linda Linda, a 2005 Japanese film about a group of girls who form a band at their high school, is showing at the Freer Gallery Friday at 7. Free.

If you’re in need of an excuse to rock leg warmers and offensively bright neons, try the Black Cat’s Eighties Mayhem dance party Friday night. The throwback tunes start at 9. $10.

Kick off the holiday season and grab breakfast with Santa at the Mall at Prince George’s Saturday morning. There’ll be holiday-themed activities, face painting, balloon animals, prize giveaways, and of course, an appearance by the big man himself. Admission is $5, or free with the donation of a new toy for a child in need. 9 to 10.

The DC pizza-and-table-tennis joint Comet Ping Pong is hosting the NY Night Train’s Soul Clap and Dance-Off Party Saturday night, featuring 1960s R&B music. Bring your best moves and you could win a $100 cash prize. 10:30; $5.
