Hear author and journalist Peggy Orenstein discuss her new book, Cinderella Ate My Daughter: Dispatches From the Front Lines of the New Girlie-Girl Culture. The book examines the role of all things pink and sparkly in girls’ lives. At Borders in Friendship Heights at 7.

Trouble and Bass DC present Mikix the Cat and Samo at the U Street Music Hall. It’s free if you buy a Trouble and Bass T-shirt, $10 otherwise. 10 PM.

Friday, January 28
If you missed it last fall, catch DC Shorts Rewind, featuring the recently Oscar-nominated God of Love. The black-and-white comedy reimagines Cupid as a New York hipster. The screenings take place at the Atlas Performing Arts Center at 9:30 tonight and 10 tomorrow. Buy tickets ($12) through Vendini.

The Real Dr. Strangelove is coming to the George Mason University’s Center for the Arts. L.A. Theatre Works is performing the radio-theater play based on Peter Goodchild’s recap of the supposed start of the nuclear war. 8 PM; purchase tickets ($18 to $36) at the GMU site.

The Moderate, along with the Junior League Band and Oh So Peligroso, is playing at the Black Cat. The show, combining rock, bluegrass, and alternative country, starts at 9; get tickets ($10) at Ticket Alternative.

Channel your inner ten-year-old boy and watch some really big trucks smash into other at Monster Jam. The Gravedigger, Crush Station, and more are at the Verizon Center tonight at 7:30 and tomorrow at 2 and 7:30. Get tickets ($23 to $68) at Ticketmaster.

Saturday, January 29
The improv theater that gave us Amy Poehler and Ed Helms is coming to DC. The Upright Citizens Brigade Touring Company is performing two shows at Sidney Harman Hall. Get tickets ($20) at the Shakespeare Theatre Company Web site. 9:30.

Gigi Bio’s solo show, “Biomorphic,” is opening at the Art Whino Gallery. Her photo collages capture the abstract and emotional side to the bustling streets of New York City. The opening reception is 7 to 11, and there’s no cover. The exhibit is on display through February 16.

For another art option, check out a gallery talk by Israeli glassblower Dafna Kafferman, followed by an opening reception for the other five women artists whose works are currently on display at American University’s Katzen Art Center. They include a video artist and a witty comic illustrator. 5 PM; free.

Head to DC9 for a dance party featuring DJ Gavin Holland and Sammy Bananas. 9 PM. It’s free before 10, $8 after.

Sunday, January 30
Singer/songwriter Dar Williams is performing with Ibis Chamber Music in “crossover concert” at Artisphere. The concert combines Williams’s pop-folk style with traditional vocal music and arrangements for a string quartet. 4:30 and 7:30. Buy tickets ($35) on the Artisphere site.

Husky-voiced pop singer Lissie takes the stage at the 9:30 Club tonight. She’s performing songs from her debut album, Catching a Tiger. 8 PM; buy tickets ($15) at TicketFly.
