Things to Do

What to Do This Weekend: May 10 to 13

Hit up Truckeroo, see some cute animals, and backpack through the European Union (the embassies, that is).

Thursday, May 10

CLOTHES TRUCK: The food-truck market in DC has to be all but saturated, so the people behind
Styleliner
took a different tack: roving clothes store. The repurposed 20-foot potato chip truck has been turned into a boutique featuring
pieces from Joey Wolffer. The truck will be stationed at the W Hotel during happy hour. 6 PM.

PETS: If you want to see a picture of a cute
cat or dog, you usually have to make your way to–well, essentially any
website. But
what if you could simply look at your wall (or your actual,
living pet?)? Did I just blow your mind? At Torpedo Factory’s

Raining Cats and Dogs, you’ll find animal art, a pet adoption drive, and pet-centric arts and crafts. Free. 6 PM.

Friday, May 11

DYNAMIC DUO: Down the street at Red Palace, you can see plenty of burlesque–but can you also catch a movie? At
Atlas Arts, you get both this weekend–catch sexy (not porn!) shorts and a variety/burlesque sideshow from Tilted Torch, who brought
down the house at Red Palace last week. Tickets ($20) are available online. 7 and 9:30 PM.

FOOD TRUCKS: Speaking of food trucks, get ready for food-truck festival season. Fairgrounds, outside Nats Park, is hosting the first
Truckeroo
of the year. You know what that means: music, booze, and food from more than 20 of your favorite food trucks.

HORSE RACING: Couldn’t get in enough horse race boozing last weekend at the Gold Cup or your Kentucky Derby party? Preakness is next weekend,
but why wait? Washington Club is eschewing the horses and any sense of good timing with its
Pre-Preakness Soiree. Dress up like old Southern money (preferably in Maryland red, black, or gold) and enjoy an open bar and hors d’oeuvres for
a couple hours. Get tickets ($35) online. 6:30 PM.

Saturday, May 12

BAD MOMS: Even if you misplaced little Tommy
for an hour or two that one time, that doesn’t make you a bad mom–they
wouldn’t be throwing
a day in your honor Sunday if it did–but all moms are humans,
and they sometimes snap. That’s why Pinkline Project and the
Silver Spring Arts and Culture Center are hosting
Bad Mommy Moments, a live comedy about all the things all moms do but maybe wish they hadn’t I’m just glad we could all look back on this and
laugh. Tickets ($22) are available online. 7 and 9 PM.

EUROTRIP: Last week you got a passport to many of the embassies; this weekend, you get a round-trip ticket to just the European ones.
Backpack through all the embassies of the European Union (but don’t actually, backpacks aren’t allowed) with
Shortcut to Europe, a day of food, drinks, dance, cultural performances, football (the soccer kind), and more. Free. 10 AM to 4 PM.

SKETCH COMEDY: Despite our various lovely comedy clubs, amphitheaters, theaters, black boxes, and arts spaces, we don’t get all that many
non-standup comedy shows. The two-woman sketch duo
Saranuta
is out to change that. Their sketches are about food, ugly people, e-mail, and
Teen Mom, so you’ll get plenty of variety. Call 202-462-7833 for tickets ($10). 10 PM at DC Arts Center.

Sunday, May 13

YOGA: It’s Mother’s Day! Take her to brunch or better yet, make brunch at her house. At least send her an e-card. Besides that,
there’s not too much to do. It’s the start of
DC Yoga Week, so you could get to work bettering your mind and body with $5 classes at 25 local studios, but we think your mind and body
are wonderful as they are.

KIDS’ CONCERT: The
National Symphony Orchestra is hosting a
family concert at the Kennedy Center based on Camille Saint-Saëns’s
“Carnival of the Animals,” in which some
of the most talented living musicians in the world make their
instruments sound like barnyard animals–all for YOUR child.
Famed children’s poet
Jack Prelutsky will narrate poetry as illustrations by
Mary GrandPre, who illustrated
Harry Potter, flash onstage. Tickets ($15 to $18) are available online. 1 and 3 PM.
