Adding the city’s lengthy list of free film series, the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities kicks off Summer Screenings this evening, which showcases independent films at the Renaissance Dupont Circle Hotel. Tonight, catch 12 shorts chosen from past selections at the DC Shorts Film Festival, which celebrates its seventh season September 9 to 16. Speciality cocktails and snacks are available for purchase. Looking to hone your vocal chops? The Vienna Choral Society offers Voice 101 as part of its Summer Singing Workshop. Topics covered include breathing and support, range and transition areas, natural vowel production, and more. All vocal types are welcome, and you don’t have to read music to participate. Head to the Corcoran Gallery of Art for a talk with author and design expert Stephen Salny about Frances Elkins’s groundbreaking interior-design work. Elkins, well-known in the first half of the 20th century for combining design elements from different eras and styles with a focus on the avant-garde, is the subject of Salny’s latest book, Frances Elkins: Interior Design. Following his talk, Salny will sign copies, which are available for purchase. Tickets ($15) are available here. 7 PM.
