Burger Brackets: Chadwicks vs. Spider Kelly's

Today, we move on to the second round of the Burger Brackets. Who will advance? Who will fall off the charts, never to be heard from again? Make sure to vote in today's face-off!

And here we are with today's PM Burger Brackets face-off! As you can see above, we've merged the two brackets, and will alternate back and forth between the red and the green brackets as we go forward. Currently, Five Guys is battling Billy Martin's Tavern for burger supremacy (hint: if you're a Billy Martin fan, you may want to get over there and vote, and then tell all one thousand of your closest friends to vote as well). The Five Guys vs. Billy Martin poll will stay open until 10 AM tomorrow.

Burger Brackets: Five Guys vs. Billy Martin's Tavern

By Catherine Andrews

Today, we move on to the second round of the Burger Brackets. Who will advance? Who will fall off the charts, never to be heard from again? Make sure to vote in today's face-off!

Happy Friday morning, burger lovers, and welcome to the second round of the Burger Brackets! While there is still one outstanding Burger Brackets going on in the green bracket (Morton's vs. Smith & Wollensky, which is open for voting until 2 PM today), we're also starting voting for those who made it through to the second round. There are some big names in here—Five Guys, Ray's Hell Burger, and more—so make sure to vote early and spread the word to make sure your favorite gets through to the second round.

Also, on the advice of some commenters and more, uh, sports-knowledgeable folks than us, we've re-seeded the second rounds to reflect vote totals.

We'll continue doing the two-a-day face-offs for the next four weekdays, and then we'll move to a one-a-day face-off when we advance to the third round.

But enough explaining! This is about the deliciousness of burgers, not how much we can write about the rules. Let's head to today's face-off—and it's a doozy.

(PS: Later today, we'll be merging the two brackets, so you'll be able to see all participating burger spots. For now you can see the green bracket here.)

We have to admit, we thought the throngs of Whitlow-goers would make sure that that Arlington spot came out on top—but looks like EatBar's got its own fair share of fans, as it whizzed right past Whitlow's burger in yesterday's face-off.

As much as we love Sonoma, the cozy wine bar couldn't stand up to the leagues of Chadwick burger fans. So the Georgetown branch of this friendly neighborhood pub moves up and on.

Ann Limpert

Though Ann Limpert graduated from Connecticut College with a degree in art history and creative writing, she spent most of her time in New England debating the merits of warm, buttery lobster rolls vs. cold, mayo-y ones. She spent two years covering the internet for Entertainment Weekly magazine (highlights include interviewing the Beastie Boys and dancing to "Livin' la Vida Loca" with Penn Jillette), then left to hone her kitchen skills at the Institute of Culinary Education. She has worked as a cook at several New York restaurants, researched and edited cookbooks, and now writes about food and restaurants for the Washingtonian. more

Kate Nerenberg

Kate Nerenberg started as an editorial intern at The Washingtonian in January 2008 and became an assistant editor in September 2008. A native of West Hartford, Connecticut, she spent the first half of her writing life as a sports reporter, and was the editor of the athletics section for the newspaper and student-run magazine while at Middlebury College. A joint Spanish and Art History major, Kate graduated in 2005 and took off on a year-long journey around the world. After tasting everything from fried crickets to lavish Turkish breakfasts, she realized she wanted to devote herself to writing about food, a lifelong passion. She lives with three roommates just east of Logan Circle in a house that's often filled with the smell of sauteed garlic, warm banana bread, or fried bacon and eggs. more

Rina Rapuano

Rina Rapuano's English degree from Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond put her on the path to becoming a managing editor of a weekly business magazine; a freelance copy editor; and assistant managing news editor—and later the lifestyles editor—at a weekly paper in Maryland. But she realized her true calling when her descriptions of meals to friends and colleagues always seemed to end with the same statement: “You're making me hungry.” Frankly, it was making Rina hungry, too. She chucked her day job in 2006 to become a full-time freelance writer focusing mainly on food, and now works as assistant food and wine editor at The Washingtonian. more
