This week, celebrity chefs are bombarding Washington for cooking competitions and classes.
Monday, November 8
The annual TrueFlavors Celebrity Cook-Off takes place from 6 to 9 at Eatonville restaurant near DC’s U Street. The event, which benefits the organization TrueChild, includes an Iron Chef-style competition between two teams that have 35 minutes to cook a three-course meal. This year’s participants include Top Chef DC’s Ed Cotton and Angelo Sosa and DC toques Todd Gray of Equinox and Billy Klein of Café Saint-Ex. Tuesday, November 9
Buddy Valastros, star of the reality-TV show Cake Boss, is bringing his Bakin’ With the Boss Tour to the Warner Theatre at 8 PM. He’ll talk about his Italian background, take audience questions, and demonstrate cake-making techniques. Click here for tickets ($40.50 to $61.45). Wednesday, November 10
Sur la Table in Arlington is hosting one of its kitchens basics classes—a series of sessions developed with cookbook author and celebrity chef Anthony Bourdain. Thursday, November 11
At Trummer's on Main, learn about Orin Swift Cellars’ “The Prisoner” wine, a blend of six grapes—including Syrah, Zinfandel, and Cabernet Sauvignon—that has become very popular among oenophiles. Sommelier Tyler Packwood will talk about the wine, which is paired with braised oxtail on house-made bread. The event is $49; call 703-266-1623 for reservations.
The annual Capital Food Fight—a fundraiser for DC Central Kitchen that features celebrity chefs (this year, you’ll see Anthony Bourdain, Tom Colicchio, Michael Mina, Spike Mendelsohn, and more) and tons of restaurant samples—is tonight at 6. Friday, November 12
Actress-turned-cookbook-author Madhur Jaffrey is discussing her newest project, At Home With Madhur Jaffrey: Simple, Delectable Dishes From India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka, at Politics and Prose. The book aims to make dishes from those countries accessible to the home cook. 7 PM. Copies will be available for $35.
Saturday, November 13
Today and tomorrow, the Metropolitan Cooking & Entertaining Show takes over the Washington Convention Center with hundreds of vendors; food, spirits, and wine tastings; and chef demonstrations. There are also events with celebrity chefs Paula Deen, Bobby Flay, and Rachael Ray. Sunday, November 14
As part of their effort to raise $200,000 for Children’s National Medical Center, restaurateurs Jeff and Barbara Black are holding an oyster roast from noon to 5 at Addie’s in Rockville. You’ll find roasted, fried, raw, and barbecue oysters—and an oyster-eating competition—in addition to barbecue chicken, chili, and suckling pig.
