In Bridal Party’s new feature, Unveiled, we break down the basics—and extra frills—of area bridal salons to help you decide where to shop. First up: Harriet Kassman in Mazza Gallerie.
Harriet Kassman Bridal Salon delivers a classic gown-shopping experience. Photographs by Abby Greenawalt.
If you’re looking for the out-of-the-movies dress-shopping experience—trying on elegant gowns in a fitting area with couches and flowers—Harriet Kassman Bridal Salon (5300 Wisconsin Ave., NW; 202-363-1870) won’t disappoint. The salon, going on two years old, is the epitome of classic: a glittering chandelier, a courteous staff, a selection just big enough to give you options but not so big that it overwhelms. Kassman, a petite woman who has owned the adjoining Harriet Kassman women’s boutique for 35 years, is one of the nicest people you’ll ever meet. She’ll chat your ear off (while you pet Bastien, her pretty much perfect pet poodle), but she’ll never push you to buy. “The bride needs to feel it in her heart that this is the dress she has dreamed of,” she says. “All you have to do is watch her face. When she knows it, she flushes.”

Submit your wedding music questions now.
Ignore the bad Madonna reference (although let me tell you, I’ll be having plenty of her ’80s hits blaring at my reception) and start submitting questions to Thursday’s live chat with emcee Andrew Larris.
Andrew got his start in the music biz at age 16, when he snagged a job as a performer for an entertainment company in New York. Since then, he has emceed at more than 2,000 weddings, bar and bat mitzvahs, and corporate events. He recently met Andy Kushner, who owns a pretty rockin' band called Sound Connection, and together they created A. Michael Productions, Andrew’s current business.

This wedding planner knows Washington.
If you ask event planner Michele Hodges a question about wedding venues—best place with a view, best place for a rehearsal dinner—in about five seconds she’ll be spouting out names and locations sans Rolodex or Google map. Read her advice on that as well as everything from jazzing up bland walls to giving out great wedding favors. It’s all in the transcript from yesterday’s live chat.

Two hours, 150 invitations—yes, it can be done.
Can you believe Emily and her friends made these?
Back before there were Gossip Girl parties or Grey’s Anatomy nights, women would gather to sew. They’d sit around a table and quilt or sit in the parlor and needlepoint. I don’t know which activity was more important: sewing or catching up. Quilts had to be made to keep the Little House on the Prairie family warm in the winter, and in Gone With the Wind, Melanie and Scarlett diverted anxieties about Ashley by sewing him scarves or sashes. But along with women’s necessity for crafting comes a penchant for chatting. I don’t know how many quilting bees go on these days, but I think the idea of women meeting to craft and chat is still very much alive.
