Probably to the horror of my boyfriend, I spent an hour yesterday reading along as Paul Pastor of Chas Schwartz & Son jewelers talked about engagement rings. He really covered it all—what cuts of diamonds are the prettiest, why palladium (cheaper than platinum!) is a great choice, where to find vintage rings, and even what to do if you and your partner aren’t “ring people.”

I’m sitting here trying to think of some fluff wedding subject to write on, but I’m getting nowhere. . . So instead I’m going to blog about the source of my writer’s block.

Last week my boss passed away. She’d battled and beat the cancer twice, but last Wednesday it took her. If you’d known her, you’d describe her as being energetic, lively, spirited. . . . And so this life-filled woman is suddenly very still, and without life in her body.

When I was about eight years old, I posed for a caricature on the streets of a northern-Wisconsin theme park. The artist emphasized the way one of my eyes squints a little more than the other when I smile, and, wounded, I swore off caricatures forever. Or until yesterday, when a coworker walked into my office waving around a sketch of a bride, a groom, and nine guys with cartoon bodies and oversize heads. Her brother, Brad, had gotten it drawn to reprint and give as groomsmen’s gifts.

Get married, go straight to McDonalds. Makes sense.

My post this week was going to be about our visit and tasting with the one and only Sylvia Weinstock. [Editor’s note: For those who aren’t as food-obsessed as our groomzilla, Sylvia Weinstock, nicknamed the “Queen of Cakes,” has designed cakes for Whitney Houston, Donald Trump, and many other celebrities.] I even promised I was going to write a whole post about her if she read my blog! With all due respect to Sylvia, however, something happened this weekend that is bumping her (although I do promise that she will be my next post).
