Post Watch: Post Losing Pulitzer Winners to Buyout

By Harry Jaffe

The Post collected six Pulitzer prizes for 2007, but it could lose as many as 12 Pulitzer Prize winners in the current round of buyouts.

The Post collected six Pulitzer prizes for 2007, but it could lose as many as 12 Pulitzer Prize winners in the current round of buyouts. Three are taking the package; nine are weighing it.

“It’s a very generous buyout,” says feature writer Tamara Jones, who collected a Pulitzer for her work on the Virginia Tech shootings. “I see it as a great opportunity.”

Tim Page, who previously won for his classical-music criticism, is taking the deal and planning to teach. Investigative ace Susan Schmidt, who won the prize for her work on the Jack Abramoff scandal, is taking the money—and taking her byline to the Wall Street Journal.

A Night Out: A Reception at the State Department

By Marissa Conrad

What: Dubbed “The Secretary’s Reception for Donors to the Diplomatic Reception Rooms,” this two-hour cocktail party honored more than 200 donors who contributed more than $850,000 to conserving and maintaining the rooms where Condoleezza Rice and Dick Cheney meet with foreign officials.

Where: The Department of State

When: Friday, April 25, 6 to 8 PM

Who: Rice was the main attraction, hosting a receiving line on the way in to shake hands (and score us a great new Facebook profile picture). We were one table away from Attorney General Michael Mukasey and wife Susan, who looked sharp in a pinstripe suit and black-and-white patterned dress. Marcee Craighill, director of the diplomatic reception rooms, also joined the donors.

From the Archives: Sweet Secrets: Opening Doors on the Very Private Lives of the Billionaire Mars Family

By Jan Pottker

The fortress-like building at 6885 Elm Street in McLean has no sign indicating it's the headquarters of a multinational corporation. As you approach the building, the only clue suggesting the presence of Mars Inc. is the warning: "Private Property."

One of the best-kept business secrets in Washington is the presence of this family-owned corporation in the Virginia suburbs. Few Washingtonians realize that the country's fifth-largest private business is headquartered here. The Mars company and the family that owns the candy giant have turned secrecy into a way of life.
