Navy and Gold Wedding at Annapolis’ Naval Academy Chapel

Oh, how we love a sweet proposal story! Elly Sankovich and Rob Roy’s takes the cake, so to speak, and we won’t spoil it here–we’ll only say that he set the bar high. Take a look through the photos of their lovely winter wedding, captured by Shannon Moffit.

Rob was in flight school in Mississippi when he first spotted Elly, who he met through mutual friends when they were out at a restaurant. It was love at first sight for Rob, while Elly found him very charming in return. A first date quickly followed, and though Elly was nervous when their meet up included a motorcycle ride, Rob wooed her by bringing her back to the restaurant where they’d first met. “It was the best date I’ve ever had,” says Elly.

If the ruling philosophy of proposals is “go big or go home,” then Rob certainly fulfilled that mission. Having dated long distance for a year after Rob moved to Texas and Elly to Ohio, Rob surprised Elly by showing up a day early for his weekend visit for her birthday. He told her that he’d already contacted her boss to ask the day off for her, so they spent the morning breakfasting and shopping. Later that day, Elly opened her birthday present: A travel guide book for Costa Rica. Tucked inside? Two tickets for a plane that was scheduled to depart in three hours. At the end of their week in paradise, Rob invited Elly for a romantic dinner on the beach, which ended with a slideshow video of friends and family holding signs saying “say yes.” And when Rob pulled out the halo diamond engagement ring, Elly did just that.

For their late February wedding in Annapolis, Elly wore a fur coat over her wedding dress to keep warm as she and Rob posed for portraits. After their Naval Academy Chapel ceremony–a fitting venue, given Rob’s role as a Naval pilot–they continued their celebrations at the Governor Calvert House, which they’d decked out with accents of navy and gold.

After swaying to Ed Sheeran’s “Thinking Out Loud,” Elly and Rob departed into the night, with nothing but happily ever after ahead of them.
