On the Water

What’s special: Overlooking Carter’s Creek in Virginia’s Northern Neck, this resort offers serene views. There’s lots to do on the water: learn to sail, test your crabbing skills, take a cove cruise, or borrow kayaks, paddleboats, or canoes. You can also play golf, relax at the spa, or bike around the area. Nearby, there’s the Chesapeake Bay Wine Trail (including Ingleside Vineyards, Vault Field Vineyards, and Hague Winery), the Steamboat Era Museum, and the town of Kilmarnock, with galleries and antiques stores.

What’s special: Atlantis resort offers three beaches, more than nine pools, a water park, and access to the Dig—a fascinating “sunken ruins” marine-life exhibit on the island. You can also scuba-dive, snorkel, swim with dolphins, golf, relax at the spa, play tennis, and hit the casinos and nightclubs.

The deal: This Washingtonian deal is tailored for families: Sign up for one Atlantis Kids Adventure (excluding the Culinary Adventure) and get a second free, a value of up to $105 for a full day. The deal: The Family Fun Package includes daily admission to Camp Doral for kids age 12 and under (normally $80 a day), a children’s welcome gift worth $25, free use of the driving range, free golf for kids with a paying adult after 3 PM, and a $50 resort credit per stay. America’s Walking City
