Condo Auction in Old Town

By Mary Clare Fleury

Development will sell 30 condos at reduced prices.

Parkside at Alexandria, a condo development in Old Town, announced today that it will auction off condos at reduced prices—a first for the Washington condo market, according to Parkside’s developer.

Accelerated Marketing Partners, a residential real-estate firm that specializes in selling and marketing homes fast, will handle the sale of the final 30 units in the 378-unit development. In a press release, a spokesman from Accelerated Marketing said that Parkside decided on an auction “in order to reduce ongoing marketing expenses and close out the project.”

Up for sale will be 20 two-bedroom and 10 three-bedroom units. Prices will start at $225,000—$115,000 less than what units listed for. The auction will take place on Sunday, October 28, at the Hilton Alexandria Mark Center Hotel in Alexandria, at 2 PM. An auction-information center is now open in the Parkside sales center (1617-A North Van Dorn Street, Alexandria).

The Yards Groundbreaking Ceremony with, from left to right, At Large DC Councilman Kwame Brown, DC Council Member Tommy Wells, Maria Parisi Vickers of the EPA, DC Mayor Adrian Fenty, Forest City Washington President Deborah Ratner Salzberg, DC Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton, and GSA Regional Administrator Tony Reed. Wells calls the project, "A renaissance of our city."

Mayor Adrian Fenty can add a new job to his résumé: construction worker. During the groundbreaking ceremony of The Yards—a 42-acre mixed-use development project along the Anacostia River in Southeast DC—the mayor climbed into the seat of a large front-end loader yesterday morning and dumped a pile of stone.

Atlanta Falcons new quarterback Byron Leftwich, power couple Howard Wolfson and Terri McCullough make house deals.

Byron Leftwich, a Washington native, spent $1.3 million for a new condo in Reston’s ritzy Midtown North condos. Leftwich, who was cut by the Jacksonville Jaguars in early September, signed a two-year, $7-million deal with the Atlanta Falcons on September 18. He was a star at DC’s Woodson High School and Marshall University in West Virginia.

Another big house deal: Democratic power couple Howard Wolfson and Terri McCullough bought this four-bedroom, four-bath Tudor-style rowhouse in Woodley Park for $1.3 million. Wolfson is the top strategist for Hillary Clinton’s 2008 campaign; McCullough is House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s chief of staff.

Wealthiest Zip Codes

By Mary Clare Fleury

Northern Virginia claims most of the area’s richest neighborhoods.

The Washington Business Journal recently published a list of the 50 wealthiest Zip codes in the area. Virginia neighborhoods dominated, with 27 appearances, followed by Maryland’s 19 and DC’s 4. The rankings take into account household income, average net worth, home values, and the rate of increase of wealth.

Neighborhoods in Fairfax and Montgomery counties filled out the top 14 spots, until Loudon broke through at number 15. DC didn’t even appear on the list until number 18, and even then it was in Georgetown’s 20057 Zip code, home to the University—and only 33 households.

Here’s the top ten:
