Home Hunt

By Emily Leaman

Searching for a rental? Every Thursday, we scour listings for apartments and homes for rent and run photos of intriguing prospects. This week: a new one-bedroom and den in NoMa.

This one-bedroom with den on the edge of NoMa has 800 square feet of living space. It’s on the seventh floor of the building, so the city views are fabulous. There are maple floors in the living room and carpet in the bedroom, plus a well-outfitted kitchen with granite countertops and stainless steel appliances—including a dishwasher. A full-size washer and dryer comes in the unit, and a garage parking space is included in the rent. Building amenities include access to a rooftop deck, pool, and party room, and an on-site manager and concierge.

Address: 440 L St., NW
Price: $2,350 a month
Move-in: Immediately

Frank and Wendy Raines Buy Splashy New Digs

Despite the real-estate downturn, former Fannie Mae head Frank Raines and his soon-to-be ex-wife, Wendy, are helping to boost luxury home sales.

This spring, news broke that former Fannie Mae head Frank Raines and Wendy, his wife of more than 25 years, were filing for divorce. In March, they put Beechwoods, their seven-bedroom, eight-bath Forest Hills Colonial on the market for $8.3 million—and hit the streets separately to home shop.

Frank Raines spent $4.9 million on a condo in the West End’s Ritz Carlton Residences. Click here to see pictures of the lavish three-bedroom, seven-bath condo, which has a private terrace with a hot tub. Across town, Wendy Raines spent $4.3 million on this five-bedroom, six-bath Colonial in Cleveland Park. Built in 1910, the house listed for $4.5 million and has a pool and elevator.

Now they need to sell Beechwoods, which is proving difficult. The palatial Colonial is still sitting, and the list price recently dropped to $7,595,000.

Craigslist Treasure Hunt

Our Monday picks for the best furniture finds of the week.

This quirky pink-and-brown polka-dot ottoman is going for $20 in Courthouse. It’s covered in soft velour fabric, and although the ad doesn’t mention it, the top looks like it might come off for extra storage inside—be sure to ask if you email the poster. Pair it with a chocolate couch or love seat to add a splash of color in the living room. You could also put a circular tray on top and use the piece as a side table.

Other good finds:
Vanity with mirror and stool for $125.
• Name-your-price coffee table with hidden storage.
Pub table with two chairs for $210.
• A four-seater hot tub for $1,000.

Thanks, Craig!

The Week in Real Estate

By Alejandro Salinas

A Friday round-up of real-estate news and gossip.

• The Arlington County Board approved plans for Founder’s Square, a mixed-use development with office space, retail shops, condos, and apartments that will be built on a five-and-a-half acre stretch of land bounded by North Randolph Street, Wilson Boulevard, North Quincy Street, and 5th Road North. [arlingtonva.us]

• Remember the Howard Town Center project? Five real-estate teams are interested in developing the project. To be located three blocks from the Shaw Metro stop, Howard Town Center will include a grocery store, apartments, and retail space. [WBJ via Renewshaw]

DCmud reports that the “last developable parcel of land” in Pentagon City will house Pentagon Centre, a mixed-used development across from the Pentagon City Metro station. Gone will be Borders, Marshalls, Besty Buy, and (say it ain’t so!) Costco.

Home Hunt

Searching for a rental? Every Thursday, we scour listings for apartments and homes for rent and run photos of intriguing prospects. This week: a four-bedroom, two-bath farmhouse with character.

Despite its quirky red paint job, this four-bedroom home on Foxhall Road has a great outdoor space. The home is adjacent to a park and has a front porch, garden, and barbecue area. According to the poster, the inside has been fully renovated, with hardwood floors throughout, new fixtures in the bathrooms, and new air conditioning units in each room. The eat-in kitchen has all new appliances, including a gas range and stove, dishwasher, and garbage disposal, and the home also includes a full-size washer and dryer. The ad says the house is a ten-minute walk from Georgetown University and a block from a deli, dry cleaner, and dentist. With an extra deposit, dogs will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

Address: 1522 Foxhall Road, NW
Price: $3,595 a month
Move-in: August 31
