This week, we feature a dental McDreamy in an outfit with serious history.
Photograph by Chris Svetlik.
Michael Pollack, 48 Dentist and Pyramid Atlantic Art Center board member.
What he’s wearing: J. Crew V-neck tee, vintage Gerard Perregaux watch, Levi’s boots from a thrift store, brown leather L&N belt, and a vintage fedora with tie trimming.
This outfit looks lived in, and that’s precisely what we love about it. Tell us the story behind some of the pieces. “The watch was a gift from my wife. She bought it from an estate jeweler on Connecticut Avenue. It’s a 1940s Gerard Perregaux, and it’s my favorite watch. I changed the strap from the original flashy gold band to a vintage leather one from the ’70s that I found at the now-defunct 26th Street flea market in New York. I bought three of the watchbands (they were $5 apiece) to keep as replacements. The shoes are old Levi’s boots that I bought at least ten years ago from the same place. They’re probably from the ’70s, and I’ve had to resole them twice. My hat brings back childhood memories of my father—he wore a hat every day for 45 years on his way to and from work. He’s retired now but can still rock the look. I own three or four of this type and countless baseball caps, skull caps, and other hats that I’ve accumulated over the years.”

This weekend, we stopped a hairstylist wearing menswear accessories on her way to work.
Chelsea Turner, 21 Hairstylist, Corte Salon What she’s wearing: Urban Outfitters cardigan and sandals, Zara pants, shirt from Rainbow, and her brother’s tie. The owner of the salon is Michelle Obama’s hairstylist, right? Does she come to the salon? “No way. That would never happen. I can’t really speak about it, I know that much.” How do you dress for work? “I like to dress up, try new things. I think, if anything, my job allows me to express my creativity through my style instead of having to wear a skirt and shirt every day. As long as I keep it in the color code of black, I can basically wear whatever I want.” Why the tie? “I reached for the tie because it’s pretty vibrant. I was sleeping over at my brother’s place one day, tried it on, and just kept it.”

Our column for fashionable penny pinchers is back! This week, we bring you local blogger Anatole Jenkins, who has the distinction of being both our first male contributor and our youngest contributor.
We know, we’ve been remiss—but Frugal Fashionista is back, and we’re ready to bargain shop. In case you aren’t familiar with the series, we ask fashionable Washingtonians to complete a Look for Less-style challenge using either a set budget or major trend. Our fashionable bargain hunter offers his or her take on each look, but it’s up to you, the reader, to decide whether it’s a success or failure.
Here’s the scoop on this week’s trendsetter: At just 18 years old, DC native and soon-to-be Catholic University student Anatole Jenkins has a passion for fashion, which he shows off on his blog, KidGQ. We asked Jenkins to show us several iterations of a trend for men that’s wearable in Washington, not just on the runway.
Jenkins loves the fashion-forward look of straight-leg pants and jeans. “Unlike boot-cut jeans, the straight-leg cut offers a closer fit and can easily be worn to showcase your ankles, which is a huge trend this summer,” he says. As for finding the best fit: “Buy straight legs so they gather a tad around the ankles and fit snug around the waist.” This season, he says, the look is worn best without socks.
Slim-fitting shirts best complement this silhouette, and accessorizing is easy, says Jenkins: “A great hat always tickles my buttons.”
