A Day of Dares, an Earth Day Run, and National Park Week: Fit Fun

Spring has finally sprung in Washington, so get off your couch and head for the great outdoors. To get you started, check out our list of fun, outdoor activities in the area.

Saturday, April 23

Urban Dare DC is like a one-day Amazing Race. Grab a friend and solve clues to find checkpoints where you’ll be required perform fun, silly tasks—think climbing walls and eating contests. It starts at noon at McFadden’s and participants can register ($90 per team of 2) up until the official start or online at Active.com.

Yoga District (1910 14th St., NW) is offering Yoga Activist Training, giving avid and beginner yogis the chance to serve and share with the homeless, mentally ill, and addiction recovery communities. The two-day training is led by yoga teachers and social workers, and participants don’t need to be certified yoga instructors. $160; register and get more information at MindBodyOnline. 9 AM to 6 PM.

Through Sunday, April 24

This land is your land, so take advantage of National Park Week, when all 394 national parks are welcoming visitors free of charge. Participating parks in the area include Shenandoah National Park, Prince William Forest Park, and C&O Canal National Historic Park. Saturday is Junior Ranger Day, so take the kids to Roosevelt Island for story time and scavenger hunts or to the US Marine Corps War Memorial for bootcamp, complete with training activities for future park rangers. Shenendoah is giving kids the chance to play dress-up in a ranger uniform, take guided hikes, and learn all about bears.

Wednesday, April 27

Starting tonight at Saffron Dance Studio (3260 Wilson Blvd., Arlington) is DhoonyaFIT, a workout class that combines the best of Zumba and Bollywood in a fun, yet intense class that is said to burn up to 800 calories. The class will be offered weekly through July 20 from 6:30 to 7:15 PM. $20 per class.

Thursday, April 28

Registration for Saturday’s Earth Day 5K closes tonight at 8:59 PM. The race goes through Silver Spring, beginning at 8 AM. Register ($30) at active.com.

Saturday, April 30, and Sunday, May 1

It’s time for the DC Avon Walk for Breast Cancer. Over two days, teams will walk 39 miles in support of breast-cancer research and to honor victims and survivors. The last day to register is April 29, but with a minimum donation or fundraising goal of $1,800, it’s best to get started now. For more information, visit the walk’s Web site.
