The Washington Jewish Film Festival screens features, shorts, and documentaries from 11 countries and brings together actors, directors, and scholars to talk about Jewish cinema.

Opening night brings The Year My Parents Went on Vacation, a dramedy about a 12-year-old boy whose parents flee Brazil and leave him in the care of his grandfather, who, unbeknownst to them, has just passed away. One of the grandfather’s Jewish neighbors takes the boy under his wing.

In recognition of Israel’s 60th anniversary, the festival features more than a dozen works from Israel. An award-winner at Cannes, Jellyfish weaves together the stories of a bride, a Filipina caregiver, and a waitress. Other Israeli highlights include Aviva My Love, about an aspiring writer in Tiberias; Love and Dance, about a young boy who uses dance to bring his family together; and The Cemetery Club, a documentary about a group of men and women who meet weekly in Israel’s national cemetery to debate and read poetry.
