Flamenco—the castanet-clicking folk dance that began in 18th-century Spain’s Andalusia before catching on in Latin America and Cuba—seems more popular than ever. The annual Flamenco Festival, always a crowd pleaser, brings some of the dance’s finest practitioners. February 9, the group Cuatro Esquinas—singers Carmen Linares and Miguel Poveda, guitarist Juan Carlos Romero and dancer Pastora Galván—adds a contemporary flair to flamenco’s gypsy roots. February 10, guitarist Tomatito, who plays a gypsy music known as “compás,” performs with his quintet. February 12, Gala Flamenca: Mujeres (mujeres means women) features three distinguished dancers—Merche Esmeralda, Belén Maya, and Rocío Molina—with singer Diana Navarro. The festival concludes February 14 and 15 with Ballet Flamenco Eva Yerbabuena, led by the winner of Spain’s National Dance Prize.
