An exhibit marking the reinstallation of the Corcoran’s collection of American art. The 200 paintings range in time from the Colonial era to the late 20th century and in theme from politics to people, such as Gilbert Stuart’s solemn portrait of George Washington and a painting of Mao Zedong by Andy Warhol. There are lush American landscapes by Albert Bierstadt and Thomas Cole as well as cozy domestic scenes by American Impressionists Mary Cassatt and Childe Hassam. From more recent years are abstract paintings by Richard Diebenkorn and Willem de Kooning plus sculpture by contemporary artist and former Washingtonian Martin Puryear.
