An exhibit from Chicago’s Field Museum and Newberry Library. In it are more than a hundred of the world’s most unusual and interesting maps, from three Leonardo da Vincis to an interactive lab called “Find It, Map It, Make It.” There are maps of ancient Rome, chiefdoms in the Congo, and Jerusalem as seen by Christians in medieval times. Some of the maps are as accurate as tools and exploration allowed at the time; others, such as one by J.R.R. Tolkien, are fantasy. Another perspective can be found in “Mapping the Cosmos: Images From the Hubble Space Telescope.” Admission to this show and to the permanent collection is free. The attention to cartography has also caught the imagination of Charm City, which presents the Baltimore Festival of Maps. Many of the city’s cultural institutions are taking part in workshops, seminars, and walking and driving tours. For details, goto baltimorefestivalofmaps.com.
