Painters in the Color Field movement created large expanses of color by pouring or spraying a thin layer of paint onto raw canvas. Gene Davis, Sam Gilliam, Morris Louis, Kenneth Noland—all of whom lived in Washington—as well as pioneers Helen Frankenthaler and Jules Olitski used this technique to striking effect. “Color as Field: American Painting, 1950–1975,” comprising 40 works, closes May 26.
