Before he became a renowned collector of Asian art, Charles Lang Freer was drawn to the moody, pastel-colored paintings by American artists James McNeill Whistler, Dwight Tryon, and Thomas Dewing. Two recently opened exhibits, “Freer & Whistler: Points of Contact” and “Surface Beauty: American Art and Freer’s Aesthetic Vision,” highlight that part of the benefactor’s life and collection; they’ll continue indefinitely.
