The Carrs—he was a trial lawyer, she a teacher of art history before becoming deputy director and chief curator at the National Portrait Gallery—began collecting photographs 30 years ago. What they’ve gathered is known as “street photography,” those moments serendipitously captured by many of the biggest names in 20th-century photography—Diane Arbus, Harry Callahan, Robert Capa, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Walker Evans, Robert Frank, Lee Friedlander, Lewis Hine, Dorothea Lange, Lisette Model, Paul Strand, Weegee.
