Oriental emperors in the 17th century commissioned work by the best artists they could find. The art form they favored was books (the literal translation of the Persian word muraqqa’ is “albums”) of images and calligraphy depicting Sufi saints, scenes from nature, and home life in the imperial court. The results—86 are in this exhibit—are exquisite, but the added value is a lesson in the history and culture of India, Persia, and central Asia.
