David in Shadow and Light by playwright Yehuda Hyman and composer/violinist Daniel Hoffman opens May 6. A world premiere commissioned by Theater J, it is, says artistic director Ari Roth, “an ensemble musical with ten actors, puppets, rear projection, and a four-piece band that plays a fusion of klezmer, world music, musical theater, and rock.” It’s Theater J’s biggest production ever. Adds Roth: “The subject is King David—his enormous heart, which gets him into trouble, his loves (he had 18 wives), his prodigious talents and tense relationships.” The cast includes local favorites Will Gartshore, Donna Migliaccio, and Larry Redmond. Playing David, from infancy to his forties, is Matt Pearson, a Sidwell Friends graduate.
