The School for Scandal, Richard Brinsley Sheridan’s comedy of manners—good and bad—opens May 7. Richard Clifford, who has a deft touch with Restoration plays, directs a cast headed by Catherine Flye, Hugh Nees, Kate Eastwood Norris, David Sabin, and Tom Story. The plot sounds as if it’s taken from a 2008 tabloid. Gossip rules the day; so do deception, bribes, connivances, manipulation, tests of character, lavish spending by a newish wife, and rakish behavior by young swains.
