“Richard Avedon: Portraits of Power” opens September 13. Few photographers equaled the body of work of Avedon, who died in 2004 at age 81. His photographs—whether destined for a Vogue fashion spread or a New Yorker article—were distinctive. Many of the more than 200 images of movers and shakers, artists, and others—from Ronald Reagan to Jackie Kennedy to Sean Penn—come across as a kind of psychological x-ray: revealing yet enigmatic. Closes January 25. See page 54 for a selection of Washington portraits from the show. Tickets ($14 for adults, $12 for seniors and military, $10 for students) may be purchased at corcoran.org or ticketmaster.com. 500 17th St., NW; 202-639-1700.
