Ruth Jarman and Joe Gerhardt, known together as Semiconductor, describe their multimedia creations as “digital noise and computer anarchy.” The cutting-edge and truly avant-garde artists are particularly interested in chaos theory and artificial intelligence. Their Magnetic Movie, from which this still photo was taken, is part of the exhibit “Black Box: Semiconductor,” opening August 25 at the Hirshhorn Museum (Independence Ave. and Seventh St., SW; 202-633-1000; hirshhorn.si.edu). The short film was made during a residency at NASA’s Space Sciences Lab at the University of California at Berkeley; its soundtrack features naturally occurring electromagnetic signals from the earth’s ionosphere and magnetosphere. The exhibit—likely to cause some comment and some head scratching—closes December 14.
