“The Scurlock Studio and Black Washington: Picturing the Promise”—presented with the National Museum of African American History and Culture, to be built on the Mall—opens January 30. Addison Scurlock moved his photography studio to 900 U Street, Northwest, in 1911; his sons followed him into the business, which closed in 1994. Their portraits of African-American bourgeoisie, schoolchildren, sports teams, debutante balls, celebrities, and the 1968 riots were seen nationwide. It’s a remarkable exhibit—a related book will be published this month—as well as a history lesson.
