Light installation adds fun to the National Gallery
Overheard at the National Gallery of Art’s East Building: A father, mother, and two little girls, around ages six and eight, are at the top of the stairs leading to the concourse level.
Six-year-old: “I want to see the lights.”
Mother: “I thought we’d visit Degas’s ballet dancer first.”
Eight year-old, from halfway down the stairs: “I’m going to the lights.”
Father: “Whatever.”
All four descend toward Leo Villareal’s installation called “Multiverse.”
Villareal, a sculptor who works with lights and computers, has transformed the underground walkway between the East and West buildings into a postmodern fairyland. Some 41,000 LED lights, placed in parallel lines along the wall and ceiling, flash on and off in changing and surprising patterns. The effect is almost hypnotic. “Multiverse” will remain in place through November, but some hope it will stay forever.
