Before printing presses made book pages more linear and less elaborate, manuscripts were handwritten and often illuminated with gold, paint, and calligraphy. In “Heaven on Earth: Manuscript Illuminations From the National Gallery of Art,” there are more than 50 single leaves and four bound volumes of manuscript illuminations executed between the 12th and 16th centuries in Europe. Quite a show. Closes August 2.
