“Jean Shin: Common Threads” opens May 1. Known for taking the detritus of a consumer society, Shin turns objects such as umbrellas and lost socks into art. Her “Chance City” is a house of cards made from non-winning lottery tickets, “Chemical Balance” is a mound of empty pillboxes, and “Everyday Monuments” has been constructed for this exhibit from several hundred trophies donated by people in the Washington area. Closes July 26.
