Every night at 6 for the past decade, artists have taken the stage in the Kennedy Center’s Grand Foyer to give a free performance. You might catch a rock singer, an opera star, a storyteller, or modern dancers. No tickets, no dress code. When there are no seats left, the audience sits on the floor or the steps. The ambiance is friendly.

The 41,000 artists who have performed on the Millennium Stage include Norah Jones, Bobby McFerrin, Jessye Norman, Patti Smith, the Preservation Hall Jazz Band, and the Royal Shakespeare Company. Some of those performances were recorded and can be seen online at kennedy-center.org/millennium.

For its tenth birthday on February 5, the Millennium Stage will offer a series of free programs, capped off with indie-folk singer Sufjan Stevens in the Opera House from 9 to 10.

It starts with the US Navy jazz ensemble, the Commodores, in the Grand Foyer at 6. Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre performs in the Opera House from 7 to 7:40. The NSO plays Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition in the Concert Hall from 8 to 8:30.

Two tickets per person will be given out the morning of Saturday, January 27, first come, first served. If you miss out, the performances in the Opera and Concert halls will be screened live in the Grand Foyer.
