Film noir—the British kind—is paid tribute in Brit Noir, a monthlong series at the National Gallery of Art showcasing English crime films, such as 1950’s Night and the City (November 6), about a small-time schemer who crosses big-time mobsters; the 1960 thriller The Criminal (November 7), based on mobster Albert Dimes’s life; and Brighton Rock (November 15), a 1947 adaptation of a Graham Greene novel. Closing the series is Hell Drivers (November 29), directed by Cy Endfield, who was blacklisted as a Communist and left Hollywood in the ’50s. The free movies are shown in the East Building Concourse Auditorium.
