Dream Kitchens: Online Extras
  • This Great Falls kitchen was part of an addition completed last year. Anthony Wilder Design Build Inc. handled everything from concept to completion.
  • The homeowners had already laid new wood floors in their home—reclaimed boards from a 19th century cotton mill in Georgia—so the builders used the same wood in the addition and added matching ceiling beams to create a seamless transition from the old port
  • A red Aga four oven cooker is the focal point of the room, says homeowner Howard Glaser. "Howard is a serious cook," adds his wife, Karen Hinton. "I'm good at cleaning up."
  • The couple had a custom-built green sideboard added for extra storage. Hinton had seen a similar piece in a magazine and had it recreated for her dream kitchen.
  • A living space with a gas fireplace is opposite the kitchen, and was also part of the addition. This is one of two fireplaces in the home.
  • Fashion icon Coco Chanel inspired this feminine kitchen in McLean's Spring Hill Farm community. "I wanted it to be as pretty as a dress shop," says architect J. Paul Lobkovich of Vienna's Lobkovich Kitchen Designs.
  • The range hood, made with polished and brushed stainless steel and rounded metallic tiles, was intended to resemble a wedding cake. The crystal chandelier adds an extra touch of bling to the space.
  • The freestanding refrigerator and freezer were fitted with handblown mirrors and treated to look like antiques.
  • Surrounded by windows, the kitchen is pleasant in all kinds of weather. During thunderstorms, the homeowners open the shades and watch the lightning.
  • The owners of this historic home moved the kitchen into the greenhouse. "It's not the most practical type of building to put a kitchen in," says David Jones, whose DC architecture firm oversaw the design. Challenges included cabinet, appliance, and counte
  • Two freestanding islands provide cabinet storage and a bit of seating.
  • Two custom light fixtures—one suspended over each island—illuminate the countertops.
  • A curved bar provides storage in this narrow Capitol Hill kitchen, just six feet across at its widest point. Floor-to-ceiling windows, which overlook the deck, make the space feel bigger.
  • A curved seating area includes a built-in bench made of stained maple—with storage space underneath—and a low gray table from the Frank Gehry Collection. Homeowner Brad Toll first saw the Gehry line at a museum in Philadelphia. He purchased the table and
  • Bold paint colors and minimalist furniture and appliances give the kitchen an uncluttered look.
  • Removing the eight-foot living-room ceiling made Donnie Phelps's ranch home feel much more open.
  • Homeowner Kathleen Cregan wanted the kitchen to be modern but not off-putting.
  • Bold colors throughout make the space more interesting.
  • An adjacent dining room incorporates some of the kitchen's colors, creating a more cohesive space.
