Great Bars 2013: The Gibson

Behind an unmarked door lies this dimly lit hideaway, opened in 2008 at the front end of the speakeasy trend. Service can be aloof at best, dismissive at worst (the latter tends to be the case on weekends), but what the place lacks in pleasantries it makes up for in expertly made cocktails and a seductive mood. Flickering candles, plush booths, and loungey jazz fill the space, which attracts a fashionable crowd eager to sip classic martinis, fizzes, and sours. Reservations are key, especially on weekends, because standing isn’t permitted. Want something off-menu? Just ask—the bartenders are happy to share their latest libation. Insider tip: Unlike most “underground” bars, the Gibson has a 40-seat back patio, where in warmer months you’ll find old-school blender creations such as Hurricanes. Open daily.
