Beth L.P. Ungar, M.D. has broad experience in health care delivery in academic, military, public, private, and international settings. A native of Chicago, Dr. Ungar graduated from Radcliffe College of Harvard University with a B.A. in Biology. After a year teaching in a village school in Kenya, she obtained a Master's degree in Anthropology from American University and became a fellow in Suicide Prevention at the National Institute of Mental Health. She obtained her M.D. from Georgetown University, having spent her first two years of medical studies at Northwestern University, and she did her internship and residency in Internal Medicine at Georgetown University Hospital.

Dr. Ungar is highly trained and board-certified in Infectious Diseases. She completed a fellowship in the field at Johns Hopkins University and a medical staff fellowship at the Laboratory of Parasitic Diseases of the National Institutes of Health, where she conducted research on and developed rapid-detection tests for the intestinal parasites Giardia and Cryptosporidium. She was a Clinical and Research Associate Professor of Medicine and Preventive Medicine at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (USUHS), where she supervised medical students, and was an attending physician at the Walter Reed Army Medical Center. During this period, she consulted on and coordinated tropical medicine projects in Africa, Southeast Asia, and Latin America.

A member of Alpha Omega Alpha, the medical honor society, and a Fellow of the American College of Physicians, Dr. Ungar has received multiple awards, including an Exceptional Service Medal from USUHS.

Since 1994, Dr. Ungar has practiced medicine with Foxhall Internists, where she has treated a broad range of medical problems, particularly in post-adolescent and middle-aged populations. She has been married for 43 years to Sanford Ungar, a journalist and educator; they have a son and a daughter, who is a medical student.
