Top Lawyers 2013-2014

How Can We Help You?

From intellectual-property to criminal-defense to divorce attorneys, here are nearly 1,000 of Washington’s best legal minds By Marisa M. Kashino*

Washington is home to some 80,000 lawyers. That’s more attorneys packed into one metropolitan area than the entire lawyer population of many countries. (Insert lawyer joke here.) Every other year, we attempt to sort through this vast group and identify those who warrant inclusion on our Best Lawyers list. It’s a challenge to be sure and by no means a perfect science.

Our 2013 list is our largest, with almost 1,000 attorneys across 30 practice areas. { Read Full Methodology }

We began the selection process last spring by mailing surveys to thousands of lawyers, asking whom they deemed the best among their peers. We then added several more layers of research and reporting, calling and e-mailing still more attorneys to solicit their input and reading up on notable recent successes and accomplishments of area professionals. Yet we’ve no doubt left someone off whom you consider a top talent. The omission of an attorney doesn’t mean he or she isn’t an outstanding lawyer. Like we said: not a perfect science.

The list includes a wide variety of specialties. Though we hope you’ll never have to rely on some of them—such as divorce, personal injury, and criminal defense—we also hope you’ll find what you need here.

Where location is not specified, an attorney’s principal location is in the District of Columbia. Firm names aren’t given for solo practitioners.
