A Lantern on the Hill

By Ellen Ryan

Brick gives way to glass and steel in this Eastern Market rowhouse. The self-supporting frame—around the kitchen and second-floor study—not only holds the acid-etched translucent panels but serves as “an intelligent shelving solution” inside, says David Jameson Architect. A few transparent sections allow strategically framed views of trees and sky. “A sculptural, simple gesture that completely modified the character and feel of this townhouse,” the jury decided. “It complements the existing house in scale but is striking as a cocoon of light.” The contractor was LR Mailloux Construction of Northeast DC.
