Stuck in the Middle With You

By Ellen Ryan

“A great example of infilling a narrow, overlooked site,” the judges said of these stacked townhouse-type units north of DC’s Logan Circle. Bonstra Haresign Architects turned a 21-foot-wide lot into condos with lateral bands of steel and masonry. Hoops in the steel framework accommodate planters that will allow foliage over time to soften the building’s angular form. Eight of the nine floors offer double-height living spaces with floor-to-ceiling glass and dual balconies. “It’s different from but in sync with its neighbors,” the jury noted. “Too often we see trying to look exactly like what’s next door, but that’s not the way we want to live today.” The contractors were Furioso Development with Phillip Abraham of Northwest DC.
