Home Design Deals: Splurges and Steals

By Gretchen Cook

Fine design doesn’t come cheap. Or does it? Here are good home furnishings for when money is no object—and when it is.

For more great blowouts and bargains, see the Deals column in the March issue of The Washingtonian.

Splurge
Floating shelves offer an interesting architectural alternative to paintings or other wall decor. BoConcept’s sleek Occa shelves come in six veneer options, such as cherry, wengé, and white, and two widths: 303⁄4 for $119 and 59¼ for $169.
BoConcept, 3342 M St., NW; 202-333-5656; boconcept.us.

Steal
Ikea’s larger Lack shelves come in only three colors, and the finish is not as fine, but at $14.99 for a 43¼ (seven colors) and $24.99 for 743⁄4 they do the job for less.
Ikea, 10100 Baltimore Ave., College Park, 301-345-6552; 2901 Potomac Mills Cir.; Woodbridge, 703-494-4532; ikea.com.

Splurge
The Thai bed from Centro Italia is the ultimate in platform beds, crossing minimalist style and luxury with beautifully finished Italian walnut and a recessed frosted glass light between the headboards. The queen size runs around $12,500 and is available at italydesign.com.

Steal
The Soho Bed by KMP Furniture is made of oak and lacks the lighting of the Thai bed, but at $1,057 (queen) makes a sleek style statement. It’s sold through kmpfurniture.com.

Splurge
Dining doesn’t get much finer than eating off this richly finished round mahogany table created by Monteverdi-Young in the 1960s. The refinished antique from Noho Modern goes for $4,500.

Steal
Random Harvest offers both antiques and less-expensive reproductions. This newly made round table in Indian rosewood sells for $895.
Random Harvest, Alexandria, 703-548-8820; Georgetown, 202-333-5569; Bethesda, 301-280-2777; and Arlington, 703-527-9690; randomharvesthome.com.
