When political consultant Donna Brazile's neighbor told her about a litter of Pomeranians, Brazile was reluctant to adopt one of them.

"The last thing I needed was a dog," she says. "I work too much, and I travel."

But after meeting the runt of the litter, Brazile was smitten. Chip, so named because "he's so chipper," has been her constant companion for the past two years.

Chip travels with Brazile--from Florida (he swims and surfs) to the Virginia mountains (he skis). He's frequently gone to work with her. An Andy Warhol-style painting of Chip hangs in Brazile's Capitol Hill home, along with photos of Chip with Santa and dressed up for Halloween.

When Chip needed two surgeries on his knee, Brazile had him baptized before the operation and stood by her friend during the procedures.

"That's how I knew I loved him," she says.
