Welcome to the Neighborhood

By Ellen Ryan

The site was a landlocked, legally unrecognized lot without utility access. But the owners liked the possibilities of its East Rockville location, and Broadhurst Architects designed this historic-looking saltbox to complement the odd site and surrounding homes. Main living spaces take in southern and western light, and second-floor rooms were kept small to allow for a two-story great room. An office and studio occupy the basement. Jeffery Broadhurst acted as contractor. “A modest, affordable house, lovingly detailed,” the jury said. “A lot of bang for the buck with no wasted spaces, and respectful of the neighborhood.”
