Ashby Inn, Paris, Virginia

A romantic hideaway.

Paris, Virginia

Want very good food, terrific views, and romance in the countryside? Escape to the charming ten-room Ashby Inn, in the heart of Virginia's horse country.

Dinner is a gourmet treat--try the roasted leg of lamb with braised fennel. No inn in the area enjoys a more gorgeous setting: Flowers bloom in the garden, and the lush slopes of the Blue Ridge, where fat cattle graze, rise just beyond.

And romance? Take a moonlight stroll though the tiny one-lane village (population 61), and then snuggle up with Champagne in the library.

Occupying a stately 1829 residence, the inn's main building houses six cozy guest rooms. Four suites, each with a fireplace and a private porch, share a converted schoolhouse a few steps away.

Bottom line: A sophisticated country retreat, an easy hour's drive away.

Ashby Inn & Restaurant, 540-592-3900; ashbyinn.com. Weekend rates for two, with full breakfast, $145 to $250.
