In Maryland, board sailors recommend Mayo Beach and Sandy Point near Annapolis and Rocky Point and on the Gunpowder River near Baltimore. Early morning is best at Assateague Island, which offers long stretches of beach with soft waves and no crowds. In Delaware, the north side of the Indian River Inlet is designated for surfers. More advanced surfers head for the Ocean City Inland Jetty or Bethany Beach, where there are hard-breaking waves. Surfers at Bethany must clear the beach after 10 am, when lifeguards come on duty.
