He's Got Style: Carlos M. Gutiérrez Jr.

By Mary Clare Glover

10 men who like fine clothing and know what looks good on them talk about where they shop, labels they love, fashion tips, and what they splurge on—including one man’s 3,000 ties.

Carlos M. Gutiérrez Jr., 27
Human-rights activist

How would you describe your style?

Classic and adventurous.

Favorite designers?

Zegna for suits, Hermès and Bulgari for ties, and Ferragamo for shoes.

Favorite places to shop in Washington?

Barneys Co-Op, Neiman Marcus.

Do you have a fashion inspiration?

My father [Secretary of Commerce Carlos Gutiérrez]. He acquired his sense of style from his father and made some adjustments. I do the same.

Any fashion disasters in your past?

A couple of pinstripe suits that would have been a hit in 1920s Chicago.

Favorite thing in your closet?

Sneakers by Creative Recreation.

Best fashion advice you’ve received?

Don’t jump on fads. Classics never go out of style.

Is there a dream item you’d love to own?

A white, tailor-made guayabera, the traditional shirt of Cuba.
