A Spa That’s More Than Skin Deep

By Ann Cochran

Expecting more “med” than “spa,” I was relieved to see sweeps of orchids when I entered the Medical Spa at Nova. A tiled fountain poured water onto a bed of smooth stones.

The tranquility room had all the right stuff: expensive teas, glossy magazines, cushy seating. There are no hair or nail services, but that’s not what I wanted. Interested in wellness, I considered meeting with a naturopathic physician about custom vitamins. Or I could get frown-line plumping, laser hair removal, microdermabrasion, a facial, body scrub, or massage. I chose skin analysis, a therapeutic bath, and weight-loss consultation.

Digital photos revealed my face’s skin texture, wrinkles, pores, and pigmentation. It wasn’t as dry as various cosmetics salespeople had proclaimed, but I had moderate sun damage. The evaluation is used for skincare treatment and tracking, but there was no sales pitch—just a few product samples.

After, I soaked in a massaging bubble bath surrounded by candles. I was a relaxed and happy camper as I dressed to visit with the dietitian. We had a stimulating exchange about food choices and trends. It would take more appointments to design a personalized meal plan, but I learned enough to feel inspired.

Many medispas are add-ons to cosmetic-surgery practices. Here, doctors at Nova Medical Group oversee treatments. The nurturing, knowledgeable staff does not take tips or earn com missions. I’m already planning my next visit.
