Late Night Eats
The awning simply says restaurant, but inside is a tiny Moroccan kitchen where owner Khdijg Banouas cooks until 1 am Fridays and Saturdays. Even if her chicken ($7) and lamb ($8) tagines are eaten out of Styrofoam at home, they taste straight out of the clay pot. The juicy meat, fragrant with lemon, olives, and cinnamon, falls off the bone.
Bite-size meatballs called kufta ($5) are delicious tucked into a pita with freshly made hummus or atop a pile of oiled saffron rice. For late-night comfort food, don’t miss the bastilla ($7), a sweet-savory Moroccan pie with layers of chicken and egg wrapped in phyllo and topped with cinnamon and powdered sugar. All entrées come with a couple of vegetable sides, such as cumin-scented carrot salad or a stew of zucchini and sweet yams—and none costs more than $9.
