Why go: With its brocade pillows and mosaic-patterned walls, this ornate tagine house doesn’t look like a mall restaurant (it’s next to a Ruby Tuesday) or a place where you can eat well for less than $25 a head.

What to get: Paprika-sprinkled hummus; chicken b’stilla, the eggy, phyllo-wrapped pie that straddles sugary and savory; braised chicken with green olives and preserved lemon; chicken with dates and saffron; lamb shanks stewed with prunes and sprinkled with sesame seeds; miniature meatballs simmered with tomato and harissa; t’faya couscous; Moroccan mint tea.

Best for: Festive communal feasts—the long banquet tables can seat up to 20; lingering with friends who won’t mind the sometimes slow service.

Insider tip: For a conversation-stopping sideshow, time your dinner around the nightly belly dancer (Friday and Saturday at 8, Sunday at 7:30, weeknights by advance request).

Open daily for lunch and dinner.
