You’d expect to find apples, squashes, and local cheeses at the Dupont Circle FreshFarm Market (20th St., NW, between Massachusetts Ave. and Q St.). But fabulous crab cakes?

Every Sunday, former commercial fisherman Chris Hoge hauls out the coolers and hands out sauté-pan samples of his big, ultrafresh mounds, made with lots of sweetly flavorful crabmeat and the tiniest bit of binder. We prefer the jumbo-lump version ($9 each) for eating by itself, but the less costly backfin cake ($5) makes a great sandwich.

When the market is closed for the season, you can find Hoge’s crab cakes at the Montgomery Farm Women’s Cooperative Market (7155 Wisconsin Ave., Bethesda) and at area Whole Foods stores. The jumbo lump cakes can be ordered by the dozen ($144) by calling 866-785-4100 or visiting chrismarketplace.com.
