Where’s a Georgetown hostess to get her Iranian caviar and foie gras? At this elegant and expensive Manhattan-based grocery. Besides all the trappings of the luxe life, the store carries produce, meat, and fish plus a wide selection of prepared foods. Our standbys include baby back ribs with spicy-sweet barbecue sauce ($18 a pound), cold sliced Thai-marinated flank steak ($18 a pound), miniature meatloaves ($5.50 each), lemony shrimp cocktail ($19 a pound), and a fantastically indulgent chèvre mac ’n’ cheese ($9.50)—much better than the cheddar version.
The bakery case has been hit-or-miss, with rock-hard lemon cookies and stale black-and-whites, but the house-brand salty caramel-filled chocolate bars ($2.25 each) are addictive. In this world of $45 olive oils and $15 jams, you don’t expect to find a bargain, but the prepackaged sushi offerings ($5.50 and up)—spicy salmon rolls, shrimp tempura rolls, and sliced nigiri—are generously portioned and competitively priced.
